Artwork

Those who have been with us for a long time will remember Artwork journal. CAN SA published Artwork from 1988 to 2007. During the last years we did this in partnership with an editorial team from other members of the then National Network. Whilst we received funding from Australia Council it was sent out free to members. Since its demise we have received many messages asking if there was any chance of us publishing again.

In 2010 we celebrated our 30th birthday and we decided on creating our first Occasional Artwork in conjunction with our final birthday celebration money and we hope it is not our last. We have a very limited print run but this and all of our previous Artwork journals will appear in PDF form on our new website- due by end of the year.

But in the meantime for your enjoyment please click on the link below for a PDF version of our first Occassional Artwork. We hope you enjoy this and please contact us with any feedback.
FYI the PDF is large with many images so may take some time to download.
Cheers Lisa

Word on the street

You’ve heard about it for the last few weeks you may have even participated in it at the Adelaide Festival of Ideas or as you strolled through Light Square.

The cover of the November 2011 Bulletin features some of the responses our community gave to the request for thoughts, ideas, dreams and hopes.

Some of our favourite collected phrases were:

• get up and get out
• it’s a beautiful place
• this too shall pass
• tolerance will help
• you have arrived
• preservation not progress
• smell the flowers

See more of this ephemeral art project in two places; the official Word on the Street website wordonthestreet.snappages.com/ and the upcoming Word on the Street exhibition...

COMMUNITY ARTS NETWORK OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA INC. (CAN SA)
Since 1980 CAN SA has worked towards a society in which artistic expression, cultural diversity and human rights are valued and supported.

CAN SA is the peak body for community arts and is the principal source of community cultural development, information, advice and support services in South Australia.

A not-for-profit, membership based organisation, CAN SA is governed by a Board of Management elected from the membership annually. The day to day management of the organisation is undertaken by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
"Community cultural development (ccd)
is
fundamentaly about activism... ccd is
about shifting things for the better;
shifting prejudices; strenthening communities
and developing, through culture."
Gemma Pepper, artsworker, Artwork 61, 2005
A community based organisation, CAN SA builds long term partnerships with other community sectors such as local government, health, housing, youth, and disability, where the use of the arts is seen as an effective development tool.

Community Arts are created through collaborative processes. These processes ensure a sense of connection to and ownership of the artwork, be it dance, theatre, visual art, film or other. A skilled artsworker is the key facilitator in the process of community based arts practice.
Arts practice and creative expression are at the heart of a community's vitality. It is through the things we do together as groups and communities that we gain a sense of collective identity, a sense of place and belonging.
Community Cultural Development is an ongoing process in which a community creatively determines and expresses who it is, what it is and where it wants to go.
